October 9th has come and gone, and XCOM: Enemy Unknown is upon us. Much coffee was sipped and blood shed, but I managed to throw together a series of videos that I’ll be adding to in the coming weeks. The first 2 parts are already up, with more in the can, waiting to be uploaded.
You can find the full playlist here.
The game is a re-imagining of the original X-COM: UFO Defense for PC and Playstation and takes from it all the things that made the original game so dreadful, so punishing, and so much fun. If you are having trouble making those words go together in your head, you haven’t played XCOM, baby!
Kidding aside, the game is very well made. When it was first announced many fans of the original were worried that the things that made the game so memorable, the permadeath for your squadmates, the overwhelming odds, and the moments of terrifying clarity where you realized how exposed you just left your best soldier, would get the axe in the face of a more casual gaming audience.
But XCOM is a hardcore game, and Firaxis understood this. While the tedium is streamlined, the moment to moment tactical aspects are not, and much improved in some cases. If you are a fan of turn-based strategy and a good challenge, buy XCOM: Enemy Unknown right away.
