Sandbox builder games set in space seem to be all the rage lately, with several developers, including Notch, getting in on the action. But most of them are taking their own unique approach to the whole concept, and one of the latest titles, Windforge, seems promising.

The game will be a 2D building-block RPG, and the developers say it will have high quality graphics. It will take place in an exotic sky world, Cordeus, and encourage players to explore by foot or by airship (which the players can build), while you delve deeper into the hidden mysteries of the alien world. Apparently there will also be air combat (Yay, air combat!).

“Building block games have enormous potential, but many of them are lacking clear direction and story” said Evan Hahn, Co- Founder of Snowed In Studios and Creative Director of the project in a press release. “While embracing the players’ freedom of expression makes these games special, I believe also adding structure and narrative will help harness the game’s potential, and push the genre beyond what we’ve ever seen before.”

Windforge is the first PC game from Ottawa-based Snowed In Studio. The game is still in its early stages, but they’ve released some of the concept art to give us an idea of where they’re going with this. It’s currently in development, and expected to be released later this year.
