The great frontier of space was left barely touched by the Star Trek series, and many planets are still waiting for the Federation and its expendable, red shirt-wearing crew members. A new series will take up this adventure, following the story of the U.S.S. Excalibur.

“We hope to explore some new worlds that the Enterprise didn’t get to, the Excalibur patrols a different area of the Federation. We really want to tell stories about the world we live in today in the setting of the future, in line with what Gene was doing with the Original Star Trek,” said executive producer Joseph Kerezman via email.

This isn’t just a cheap fan series. The cast and crew bring years of experience from Hollywood in all areas of production. The trailer (check it out below) shows some good quality CGI of the U.S.S. Excalibur

“We are producing the show as if it were the next Paramount Trek series, we have a great group of writers to tell great stories. We are not necessarily trying to clone the original series, but we will have the same heart,” Kerezman said.

The story here is that the U.S.S. Excalibur was heavily damaged during war game exercises, and all its crew were killed. The series follows the story of the ship after being repaired and sent back out into the far reaches of space.

According to Wikipedia, the Excalibur was an Ambassador-class starship. Just prior to the start of New Frontier, it was commanded by Captain Morgan Korsmo who was classmates with Captain Picard at the Academy. Korsmo was killed fighting the Borg, and command of the ship passed to Captain Calhoun. When the Excalibur was thought to be destroyed, Calhoun was taken for dead, but when he returned he was given command of a Galaxy-class starship of the same name.

The new series will build on the story of the Excalibur quite a bit. Anyone interested in writing scripts for the show can even join in on the team’s website. They’re currently raising funds for the project, and were looking for a few interns wanting to learn the ins and outs of production work—or as Kerezman puts it, “How to navigate the potholes of working in Hollywood.”

“I know I would have loved to have had an opportunity like that. the Industry can be quite difficult to crack, especially if you don’t know what is going on,” he said.

The team is gearing up to film the first video of the series, which they call the Webisode. Kerezman said “it takes place months before the first episode and we hope to premier it by summer.”

Wow- seriously looks promising. But the trailer looks like it suits a video game, rather than a series. 🙂
